Wenge Redwood Box

This box is crafted from curly redwood and wenge and measures approximately 11" × 3.5" × 4.5". I sourced the redwood from a local supplier in Anaheim, CA. Because the board was thin but very figured, I took some time deciding on a project; ultimately I wanted to highlight the wood’s natural chatoyancy, so I chose a classic: a box with the curly redwood as the focal point.

The body is built from wenge to provide a strong contrast, with subtle redwood accents so as not to compete with the lid. I sanded a gentle curve into the lid and added a matching curved handle for visual balance. The lid seats in a rabbet with a 45° bevel and roundover. The pair of feet also have a slight arc, creating an apron between them. For added functionality, the interior includes a removable velvet-lined tray.

The box was finished with one coat of Rubio Monocoat, which enhances the curly redwood’s chatoyancy and gives it a warm, salmon-like glow.
