Quoridor
| February 2024 |
Quoridor is a strategy game played with 2 or 4 players where the goal is to get your pawn to the other side of the board first. During your turn, you can either move your pawn or place a wall. Walls are used to block your opponent and can't be jumped over.
I made two Quoridor boards, one for myself and another for a friend. The board is made from Maple and the grid pattern was cut on a table saw. For the trim, I used Poplar on one and Peruvian Walnut on the other. The walls correspond to the trim type, so the Poplar trim board has Poplar walls, and the Peruvian Walnut board has Peruvian Walnut walls. I cut a rabbit in the trim to recess the Maple board and give it a more finished look. To raise the board higher and provide clearance underneath for a parts tray, I added additional Maple trim with a Purple Heart inlay and Maple feet. The board is finished with one coat of Tried and True, which is a beeswax and linseed oil finish.
The parts tray is a custom part I created in SolidWorks and 3D printed on an Ender v2 with 10% infill and 0.28 mm layer height which took about 14 hours to print. I hot glued magnets into the tray with corresponding ones I added under the board. Each pawn and the parts tray have a velvet pad on the bottom that I laser cut on an Epilog Fusion. There are 8 pawns to choose from which are each made from a different type of wood:
Mahogany
Yellow Heart
Purple Heart
Peruvian Walnut
Maple
Red Oak
Padauk
Poplar
