Buckeye Burl Coasters & Charcuterie Board

| February 2026 |

These coasters and charcuterie boards are made from Buckeye Burl that has quite extensive spalting resulting in the dark grey coloring throughout the wood. Because of the organic shape of these burls, most projects require some amount of epoxy to stabilize the wood. For this project, I opted to do clear epoxy using Liquid Glass tabletop epoxy with gold mica powder.

I started cleaning the wood by removing the bark with a flathead screwdriver and then sandblasted the wood to remove the remaining material in the nooks and crannies that I could not get to. For the epoxy pour, instead of building a watertight mold with silicone caulk, I decided to try and use a plastic bag in a wood mold which I had seen on YouTube to save some time. After cutting everything to size, I did two topcoats of epoxy and then applied two coats each of Black Tail studio’s N3 ceramic top coat and hard coat.
