Entry Way Table
| July 2023 |
This entry way table is 48" x 15.5,” made of Walnut sourced from Urban Tree in Pittsburgh, PA, and filled with Liquid Glass deep pour epoxy dyed with Black Transtint dye.
The epoxy was used to stabilize the wood structurally because the slab had two large cracks running the length of the piece that had progressively grown in size after sitting for a few months. The epoxy form was made from 3/4" scrap plywood, lined with plastic sheets, sealed with silicone caulk, and sprayed with mold release. After curing for a week, I demolded, planed, and squared up the slab.
To further stabilize the wood, I decided to try out inlays for the first time, and inlaid Maple bowties on the top and bottom for contrast, and Poplar bowties on the edges to blend in with the Walnut. I laser cut the bowtie templates and used a 1/4" bushing and bit on a trim router to cut the recesses. The bowties are laser cut from 5/16" maple and poplar and stacked 2 layers deep for each inlay.
The legs are made from rectangular tube steel and plate steel that were cut and welded. Using a manual mill, I cut slots in the plates for easier mounting to the threaded inserts in the slab and I also drilled and tapped ¼”-20 holes for the adjustable feet. After lots of grinding, I spray painted the legs with black semi-gloss Rust-Oleum spray paint.
The table is finished with one coat of Rubio Monocoat pure, two coats of Blacktail Studio's ceramic hard coat, and one coat of the ceramic topcoat.
