Boxes
| September 2024 |
One box is a watch box designed to hold 4 watches made from Koa wood, purchased in Kauai, with a carved Maple top and Maple splines. The other box was too small to make into a watch box but is also made from Koa wood with box joints and a glass top held in place with Maple trim.
I was only able to source small shorts of Koa wood, known for its chatoyance and is a protected tree in Hawaii, from a local furniture maker I found in Kauai. This limited me to just making boxes or smaller woodworking projects. For this project I wanted to use different joinery techniques which is why one box has splines and the other has box joints. I also recessed the hinges to hide them in one box, but mounted hinges on the back of the other box. Similarly, one box has a carved Maple top that took hours of carving and sanding whereas the other has a glass top I cut from sheet glass. I sanded the boxes to 150 grit and finished with Tried and True.
